about Amakhosi Safari Lodge
Amakhosi, is situated in the heart of Northern Zululand on the banks of the Mkuze River, on the 12000ha Amazulu Private Game Rese. Amakhosi’s uniqueness hinges on its Zulu heritage. Six luxurious river suites and two honeymoon suites rest in harmony with their surroundings. High ceilings, glass walls and private viewing decks all add to the overall impression of being one with nature. Each suite has a lounge, bedroom and en-suite bathroom with a unique bath made for two.

about Fugitives Drift Lodge
The Lodge is situated on the site of the original Rattray homestead where David’s parents Peter and Gillian came for their holidays and here the seeds of this unique operation took root in those early years.
Spacious, luxury en-suite cottages each have a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge.
The Lodge is also home to our newly renovated Annex, or Cottage. The Cottage has been redesigned to have two en-suite bedrooms and a sitting-room. One bathroom has a shower and bath, the other is a small shower-room. It is ideal for small families or couples travelling together. Pictures of the Cottage are included on our Lodge Photo Gallery.

In its original state The Guest House was the home of Mr Johan Potgieter and his family. “Mr Pot” was immortalised in Gillian Rattray’s award winning book “The Springing of the Year”. He was one of the great storytellers of this area.
Mr Pot’s house has been turned into the most charming sitting and dining room, filled with fascinating memorabilia. The original verandahs have been retained. It also has an outside eating area which has a stunning view across a plain with Isandlwana in the distance.
Cottages have large, en-suite bedrooms that are individually decorated and all have private verandahs with sweeping views of the reserve and surrounding battlefields.

Directions
From Johannesburg (approximately 5 hours drive)
Take the N12 to Middelburg. Turn of onto the N11 to Hendrina and continue to Ermelo. Alternatively take the N17 via Secunda to Ermelo. From Ermelo follow the N2 to Piet Retief and Pongola. Approximately 40 km after Pongola towards Mkuze at hte sign on your left hand side that reads „Pongola Game Reserve (SOUTH) White Elephant“, turn left into the White Elephant main gate. The lodges are signposted from here with the ‘White Elephant’ marked stones up to Safari Lodge or Bush Camp.

From Durban (approximately 3 1/2 to 4 hours drive)
From Durban follow the N2 north towards Hluhluwe and then on to Mkuze. Continue 24 km along the N2 past Mkuze towords Pongola. Ath the sign on your left hand side „Pongola Game Reserve (SOUTH) White Elephant“, turn right into the White Elephant main gate. The lodges are signposted from here with the ‘White Elephant’ marked stones up to Safari Lodge or Bush Camp.

The Leopard Mountain Lodge is located high up in the wild secluded hills of the 23 000ha Zululand Rhino Reserve with spectacular views overlooking a vast stretch of unspoiled bushland and riverine forests, from the Umsunduze River meandering below to the distant Lebombo Mountains. Each chalet (made of stone and thatch) is light and spacious with its own private balcony and hammock, incredible view, en-suite bathroom, mini bar, tea and coffee facilities and mosquito nets over the beds. When Northbound on the N2 highway, take the D464 District Road / Leopard Mountain Lodge turnoff to your left 32kms after Hluhluwe.

6.Drive a short while out of the city to the Lion Park, home to over 80 lions, including the rare white lion, as well as cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal, and a wide variety of antelope which roam freely in the antelope area.
7. The district of Newtown in Johannesburg is buzzing with things to see and do. On the outskirts of the CBD, you’ll find a range of museums and galleries to feast your eyes on. A colourful blend of local art and culture can be explored here.
8. The Carlton Centre is Johannesburg’s tallest building and is an integral part of the city’s unique skyline, along with the Hillbrow Tower and the Sentech Tower. For a small fee, you can ride the elevator up all 50 floors to the observation deck at the top.
9. A short drive form the city centre, you’ll find the Johannesburg Zoo. Established in 1904, the zoo is home to over 2000 animals and is spread out over a serene and leafy 54 hectare area.
10. Nature lovers can enjoy peaceful walks in the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve just outside the city centre. Also a National Heritage Site, the reserve has yielded evidence of inhabitants up to 250 000 years ago and has indigenous highveld flora, from grasses and flowers to trees.

The excitement of Vodacom Durban July Day surpasses that of any other event on the African continent. 56 000 people are expected at Greyville to witness South Africa’s best thoroughbreds storm down the home straight to the finish of the R2 million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July. If you haven’t secured reservations, there are many casual restaurants, including Greyville’s popular Al Fresco area, The Paddock, where you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Try your luck gambling at the Suncoast Casino

If winning is on your agenda, then the 7 000 m² casino, with both smoking & non-smoking facilities, 1250 slot machines and 50 game tables (Blackjack, Poker, Roulette, Punto Banco and Dice), the Suncoast is just the place to go!

Take a rickshaw ride along the beachfront

There are only about twenty registered ricksha-pullers in Durban. They are noted for their magnificent head-dresses resplendent with beads and other decorations. A great way to get around and feel like a real tourist.

Shop for spices at the Victoria Street market

There are around 180 stalls selling basketwork and brassware, wood articles as well as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. The stalls’ main attractions are the exotic spices imported from India. They will transform your curries to fabulous!

Visit the Mangrove Swamps – On the North Bank of the Mgeni River

The area is used as a Nature Conservation Education Centre. The black mangrove, the red mangrove, and the white mangrove may be seen. On the shoreline, there are sand dunes where creeping plants and pioneer scrub are to be found. There is some birdlife, including the Mangrove Kingfisher, Curlew and Water Dikkop.

Buy Zulu crafts and artwork at the beachfront market

Spend a few hours browsing around the Durban beachfront market. You will find wonderful examples of traditional beadwork and basketry for sale at incredibly low prices.

Join an organised tour of the Indian District

The Indian district is around Grey and Victoria Streets. The Tourist Board organises a two and a half hour “Oriental Walkabout” of this area, which includes a visit to the Victoria St Market and the muthi market.
