Groupon South Africa launched with a bang a few years ago, and they have continued to grow and gather popularity. One of the newest, and most popular, sections on Groupon is the Groupon Travel section.So what do we at CompareTravel think of the Groupon Travel Deals?
Overall they are really excellent value and a fantastic way to discover new places and accommodation options, which you would never have previously heard of. Further, you can often pick these up for more than 50% off the standard price, meaning that you really are saving a bundle. The only downside to these groupon travel deals is that they are typically quite restrictive in terms of date range(s) and that they can get sold out very quickly. However if you are flexible in terms of when you travel, then they can be a really money saver. Typically the companies that use groupon to promote their travel specials are the smaller, less well known ones, but that does not mean that they are not worth trying out – it just means you have not heard of them. However every now and then a larger, more well known travel company or hotel will offer an excellent travel discount.

Flysafair Launches

Flysafair has just announced that they will be operating commercial flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town (up to 10 flights per day) starting in September. Their website can be found here www.flysafair.co.za. The company initially started with offering aircraft leasing, maintenance and charter services. However other airlines would use them (unbranded planes) when they had one of their planes out due to being serviced, or when airlines needed to take on additional capacity. This means that basically the management team behind Flysafair.co.za have quite a few years experience in the South African airline industry, unlike a few other low cost airlines that paunched in the recent past but failed to sustain themselves. Overall, we wish flysafair the best of luck and the more airlines we have operating here, the better for the consumer and for competition.

Durban July Specials 2013

The Durban July 2013 is fast approaching (just look how quickly this year has flown by already), so it would be a good idea for you to start booking your trips there, if you are planning on going. It is great to make the Durban July an entire weekend affair, even if you stay in the Durban area. Book a hotel, go to the races, and just enjoy the whole weekend.

Looking to go to Mauritius for the December 2013 Holidays? You’ve come to the right place. At compare travel we search the internet to find only the best Mauritius holiday packages. Going to Mauritius in December is one of the most expensive times to go, and this is due to mainly the excellent weather during that time, and the fact that school holidays fall over the same period. So, even though it is expensive you are still able to find some great deals, if you are patient, book early (or very last minute) and keep your eyes open. When looking for Mauritius deals in December, look for specials that are pay for x days and get x days free, packages that are all inclusive (such as including all meals and all drinks including alcoholic), and packages that have discounts for children below a certain age.

The weather in Mauritius in December is typically between 26C – 32C, and it’s best to try and be there in early December. Towards the end of the month, and in January and February there could be cyclones.

New Routes for Mango Airlines and Kulula Airlines

Well, it’s been an interesting few weeks in the South African airline industry, what with 1time calling it a day and a new airline called FlyGo Air launching (although this is not a low cost competitor).
Now, the two remaining low cost airlines, Mango and Kulula.com, have both launched two new routes to try and cement their positions and bring more cheap flights in South Africa. Kulula will be flying from Johannesburg to East London, starting on the 28 November 2012. The first flight will however only be on the 1 March 2013, and there will be two daily flights. Meanwhile Mango airlines have launched flights between Johannesburg/Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Although it is never good to see an airline fail (as less choice for the consumer is never a good thing), but it is great to see the other airlines picking up the slack. Let’s just hope they can keep the prices reasonable.

New Domestic Airline Fly Go Air Launching

Fly Go Air is a new domestic airline that will soon be launching in South Africa. It’s planned first flight is on the 26 November – so just about 1 month away. This first flight will be from Lanseria to Kruger International Airport (KMIA). The price will apparently be R999 one way all inclusive. Other routes planned from Lanseria include Polokwane, Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and George. The airline is planning on going live (which is when tickets will most likely be available, on next week (22 October). Given the fact that Velvet Sky never lasted more than a year, can Fly Go Air make it? Well, the one two things they seem to have going for it, is firstly that they are not a low cost airline, and so can charge more for the tickets, and secondly, that they are initially staying away from the golden triangle of JHB-CPT-DUR, which is highly competitive. Good luck to them.
