Information about Inhaca
Inhaca lies on the subtropical Inhaca Island (Ilha da Inhaca in Portuguese) off the coast of Mozambique. The island separates Maputo Bay from the Indian Ocean and the Island can be reached by means of the ferry from the Porto de Pesca, Maputo and travellers can reach the island’s landing jetty at high tide, but have to wade through the shallows to shore during the low tide. Alternatively, there are small charter flights from Maputo airport.

Inhaca Island is a popular destination boasting some of the most beautiful beaches , in Mozambique.
The reefs at Inhaca Island cover nearly the entire 100km coastline and offer some of the best diving in Africa. Most notably at Santa Maria draw many divers and the reef has a strong drift current that runs parallel to the shore which makes it ideal for snorkelling.
The Bassas Benae, a large reef off the coast of Inhaca is a regular favourite diving spot with a ship wreck torpedoed in World War 2 which attracts a wide variety of fish and coral including the colourful lion fish, barracuda and moray eels.
Game fishing at Inhaca is also popular and catches in the vicinity of Inhaca island are often outstanding and can include Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna and Dorado. The resorts and hotels on Inhaca Island offer game fishing safaris with all the equipment, boats and qualified guides.
There are a series of two and three day hiking trails, and a popular favourite is the mangrove swamps that cover much of the interior of the island and provide a fascinating array of aquatic life.
Portuguese Island is a deserted island that lies just northwest of Inhaca across a narrow strait. It offers magnificent beaches and a lagoon and is very popular as a day trip from Inhaca. Visitors can amble across the narrow strait when the tide is low, snorkel in the enclosed lagoon.
